I thought it was my duty to serve, and I did, in Viet Nam from 1965 to 1968. Surprising to me how few did, and what life is like now–and I am still here…and still out of touch.

A strong image, almost haunting if you are sensitive to sub-skin messages

BTW: can it be you had uploaded it mirror-inverted before?

Markus,
Back in 2008, I scanned about 700 of my negatives from Viet Nam on my flatbed scanner—and did them all backwards by accident. Too much work to do it all again. Also got a lot of dust, etc., which requires much retouching in Photoshop.
Since I so rarely revisit this archive, I forget the backwards bit. Such is the case with this one. Then, after posting, I realized that the U.S. Army tags on the uniforms were backwards. Pity, because I preferred the rest of the image 'backwards', but it would be too much trouble to correct just the tags.
Good 'catch' on your part.

There is lots going on in this photo of 6 men in various stages of fatigue and boredom; each with, it seems, different attitudes toward their weapons. Two of the men have no weapon? And then there is the face of a 7th soldier just showing in the upper left left. A photo worth coming back to many times. Thanks for your service and for sharing this picture.

There are six rifles in this photo, but no telling who the one on the far right belongs to. It is a powerful image of soldiers at war. The "U.S. Army" on the uniforms reads correctly, and is not backward.

I did see the rifle off to the right but didn't think it fit any of the featured 6 in the photo.
