When I was ten or twelve years old I was fascinated by ancient Greek mythology, reading the Rouse translations of Homer and baffled why other kids wanted to read comic books. Then I read a commentary that pointed out how—convenient—it was that the gods wanted a burnt offering of the sacrificial animal's bones and fat. Leaving the rest for the worshippers to consume. Win, win.
