Although I use a modest (black taped) camera with a small lens, no tripod, flash, or elaborate actions—just one quick shot and then move on, I am frequently (it seems) slapped down by the guards after my first shot.
I get the impression that museums and galleries are lightening up considerably around photography. I always ask (I'm such a wimp..) and I've been pleasantly surprised how few say "no" these days, even inside blockbuster shows. Doubtless this is because of smartphone users: nothing, not even churlish guards, is going to stand between a tourist and her selfie...

Of course, this means the best shot you're going to get of any famous painting is a forest of raised phone screens, already a total cliché...
