Richard,
A common difficulty in looking at a photograph is that, because it is a photograph and not a painting, drawing, or other object made by hand, the viewer believes the subject is something 'real' that the camera recorded. Taking it a step further, the viewer assumes that, by identifying the subject, the 'meaning' will also be clear.

All wrong, and especially so with the replacement of silver-based film and darkroom chemicals by digital imagery and computers. Nothing is 'real'. Use your imagination.

That's what I do.

OK, but from my viewpoint most photographs are like music that has words. Not all music has words, but if it does, knowing what the words mean helps the listener to a more complete understanding of the work. This photograph is like music with words in a foreign language; I ask for a translation because I feel I'm missing a whole 'nother level of enjoyment.
